FAMILY TREES can be fairly boring. Lets face it, lists of names can be a dirge to read through. Bringing your family tree to life involves some research. How did your family live back in the 1600s? What was life like back then? Many of our ancestors lived in rural areas, others in the cities, some even endured the chronic plague. Many of them migrated overseas to South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Eurpope. WHY? Consider this..was it fun living in the Industrial Revolution? Hot, smoggy, dirty, back-breaking hours and labour? If you were a grocers apprentice in a big city, working Gosh-awful hours, would the gold rush of South Africa lure you away from your homeland?

Old books are available for researchers who want to flesh out the lives of their ancestors.. Many of them are available for free at GUTENBERG

I have taken some of the better ones and created them into ebooks.THEY ARE IN WORD DOC FORMAT. You may download them for free by clicking on the Titles Below:

1   THE NATURAL HISTORY OF WILTSHIRE

2   THE BEAUX AND BELLES OF ENGLAND.

3   A JOURNAL OF THE PLAGUE YEAR

FINDING RECORDS IN SOUTH AFRICA.

Many familes ended up in South Africa. This creates a problem for researchers, as South Africa is one of the few countries in the world who destroy their census records. In addition to this, South Africa has not really done much in the way of making information easily accessible online. Things are improving and records may now be searched at the
NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF SOUTH AFRICA If you have a surname interest, I recommend searching all the data bases and using the surname only in your keyword search

THE BOER WAR

Many Canadians, Australians, South Africans and Englishmen served in the Boer War, as did nurses who travelled to and fro with the wounded. The records of people who served in the war are held by the War Office (national Archives UK). Here are some handy links for searching info from this aspect :
